“The fruit of your own hard work is the sweetest.”
-Deepika Padukone Students who elected to take Advanced ELA have all shown persistence and have not given up on the monumental challenge that faced them a few weeks ago. Students worked hard during semester 1 to prepare for the NYS English Language Arts exam given on January 22nd. Their dedication to learning material for this class should be commended. No matter how they fared on the test, throughout the semester they learned a variety of topics including, regents level vocabulary, non-fiction passages, fiction passages, poetry and how to write a five paragraph argumentative essay with supporting text references. In addition, they learned strategies for test taking they can apply to any type of exam in their future. Most importantly, they learned not to give up. Seeing students work so diligently to finish every part of the 20 page exam was absolutely incredible. These students have all received their scores from January’s test and have the opportunity to continue to prepare for the same test given in June. We applaud them on their determination and will power to continue to improve their skills!
Partners in Learning
At Skills, we value our students points of views. Our curriculum integrates what is important to our students; whether it is topics of interest, current events, or designing off site experiences to meet their needs. To make sure we are equipping our young adults with the skills they think are important, we have stepped up the game in empowering them to be partners in learning. Within each class, Ceasers, Pelham and Rockaway Bay consulted with their teachers and therapists. They choose attainable, meaningful and important goals. The goals were shared across curriculum's so all teachers and therapists can be partners in learning! Ask your son or daughter what some of their goals at SKILLs are! Below is an example of their semester goal sheet (which can also be found in their Google Drive) Let's Get Social
