Diversity is Beautiful! Business Brains This semester students have been learning about businesses in their Math classes and what are some steps in becoming true entrepreneurs. Their ideas took shape and each cohort has launched business selling a wide range of products, from smoothies to salads. Check them out in action below. Food For Change In Mindful Nutrition, students are learning about food insecurity. We applaud our students for their sensitivity towards those in need but have to be mindful of those who will exploit their kindness. As such, they have been discussing with their teachers and peers, ways in which they can safely assist those in need in their communities and other areas. They identified a Food Drive as a way they could help students like themselves who may be facing challenges with securing meals, especially during Summer when schools are on break. Through research, we have identified City Harvest's Feed Our Kids Food Drive as a venture they wanted to be a part of by organizing a food drive at Transitions. Students have been working together to bring in donations to help reach our goal of 100lbs of food collected. Here is a group of students below, organizing donations to check that all items have not passed their expiry dates and that they are physically appropriate to contribute to this worthy cause. Colors of Spring
What is more appealing than the beautiful colors that Spring brings? No where is that more obvious than the wide array of fresh delicious fruits that are available in our local supermarkets. In keeping with our trend of being mindful of what we consume, students prepared fresh colorful fruit salads in their Mindful Nutrition classes. They were able to mix their favorite fruits to create their own salads which they absolutely enjoyed. Just take a look at these smiling faces below.

Healthy Eating
A quick update on Independent Living classes with Ros & Page! Prior to spring break, many of our students have been exploring healthy options for their out-to-lunch (OTL) class! Some of our students explored new places like Jerrell's BTR BRGR, a vegan burger joint; Playa Bowls, serving healthy acai, pitaya, and coconut bowls and smoothies; Dos Toros Taqueria serving tacos, burritos, and salad bowls; Mamoun's Falafel serving Middle Eastern cuisine; and healthy options at Arbor Bistro and Shake Shack! Many of our students look forward to OTL and have been exploring these restaurants around Greenwich Village.
On Monday afternoons, keeping with the theme of healthy eating, Ros students go to the Taste Buds Kitchen (TBK), a nut-free, gluten-free, and dairy-free kitchen in the NoMad neighborhood. Some of our students have been baking delicious creations at TBK, which include Oatmeal Avocado Breakfast Cookies, Cornbread Biscuits, Macaroons, Mashed Potatoes, and many more!
Look below at pictures of OTL and the Taste Buds Kitchen!

Food and Social Justice
In their Mindful Nutrition classes, students have been exploring how food, social justice and advocacy are all related. They have learned how they can be great neighbors to others, even if they live very far away in another country. Students worked with staff to organize and prepare a Bake Sale to raise funds to support displaced families in the Ukraine. They had fun executing recipes in the kitchen that still catered to dietary needs while allowing for some tasty desserts. Their excitement was palpable as they clamored to try the treats prepared by all classes, knowing that their contributions were going to a good cause.
Enjoy some of the pictorial highlights below of their preparations and the big day!

Art Connection
Have you heard of portrait painter Kehinde Wiley?
Kehinde Wiley is an American portrait painter based in New York City, he is known for his naturalistic paintings of Black people influenced by historical paintings with a modern twist. His paintings have vivid colors and patterns. For Art Connection, students will be creating a self-portrait inspired by Kehinde’s artwork. Students are in the process of creating their backgrounds using stamps they made in class with Model Magic. The stamps are used to create patterns and texture like Kehinde’s paintings.

Nutrition and Well-Being
After our morning battling it on the field, Transitions students moved back into the classroom to discuss nutrition, healthy eating, and the power of advertising with SJU professor Monica. Students worked on an activity guessing the amount of sugar that can be found in various drinks. We were very surprised to find out about the sugar content in some of our favorite drinks! Students were encouraged to pay attention to the foods they consume, and learned about the apps Nutri Score and YUKA (both can be found in the apple and android app stores). Both apps can be used at the supermarket so that students can make their own judgement calls on the nutritional value of food products prior to making their purchase.

Cook Off!
In Food and Nutrition classes the kitchen was abuzz with excitement this week as students worked in groups to execute a recipe of their choice. They picked their challenge, organized their teams and gathered their supplies as their instructors kept a close watch. It was fun to see students motivate one another and worked together to recall tips they learned in order to create their culinary masterpieces.
Enjoy a little of the action below.

Socializing in the Sun
This year, the team saw a need and desire to create more opportunities for socialization. As March arrived, students and staff have been taking advantage of the warmer weather days and getting outside together more often. Small groups of students from two cohorts at a time are gathering at the local ball field to spend time together. Counselors, speech therapists, and additional staff support conversations amongst students to make connections and discover similar interests. The happy smiles in the photos below say it all. We look forward to continued opportunities as students get to know one another and socialize in the sun!

A special shout out to all participants during conferences this past week. We encourage students to self-reflect and advocate as much as possible, which is no easy task, but certainly an important one as they transition to young adulthood and beyond. We look forward to continuing the conversations we're having with you throughout the remainder of the school year.

Scavenger Hunts & Bank Trips
In Real World Math, students have begun their unit on business. In class, students are learning about the difference between goods, services, wants, needs and consumers and producers. Students have been able to connect these concepts to their internships, personal interests, and the preferred activities they do outside of school. Students participated in a fun scavenger hunt around Transitions to find different businesses that sell various goods and services. In small groups, they worked together to find the prices for these goods and services and compared them. In addition to scavenger hunts, students continue to take bi-weekly trips to the bank to deposit internship paychecks and check their balances. With spring approaching and warmer weather upon us, classes have also been able to sit outside after completing activities to enjoy the sunshine!

flavoring of your choice
(We tried 1 TBS melted chocolate/ 1/2 cup smashed strawberries/ half cup pureed mango)
Supplies: 1 gallon Ziploc bag, 1 sandwich Ziploc bag, 1/2 cup coarse salt, 6 cups ice, plastic jar)

Valentine's Day Social
Monday morning we had a short, but sweet Valentine's Day Social on the play street. It was a chilly morning, that was made warmer with good friends, music, hot chocolate and lite snacks! This gave our students the important opportunity to hang out and have in-person face time with friends from other cohorts.
St. John’s University & Transitions
This semester a new group of Transitions students are taking classes at St. John’s University. The morning class covers advocacy and independence and the afternoon class covers a diverse range of subjects from digital citizenship to creative writing. This week, students wrote poems about something they love. Below are some samples from those who wanted to share their work. Enjoy!

Out to Lunch
Transitions’ students who have Out to Lunch class are out and about in SoHo trying a variety of restaurants that this wonderful neighborhood has to offer. This week, some students chose a grocery store - where their $15 budget offered many choices! There were some great prepared foods as well as packaged foods which offered an opportunity for some simple meal prep practice.

Humanities Classes
This week in Humanities, the Ros, Whitman, and Dorsey cohorts were able to participate in The Civil Rights Movement in NYC Webinar, courtesy of the Museum of the City of New York. Students learned about the important role that New York City and activists such as Ella Baker and Bayard Rustin played during the Civil Rights Movement between the 1940s-1960s. Students were also allowed to participate via the chat feature and were excited when the panelists read their comment! Below are some pictures from the Zoom-based webinar!
Students also had the opportunity to socialize with their peers and learn about each other’s cultures during the Cooke Transitions Culture Carnival on February 18, 2022 during Friday afternoon classes. With support as well as participation from teachers, related service providers, paraprofessionals and community inclusion assistants, students were able to learn about all the different cultures at Cooke Transitions. Students shared their own cultural heritage as they were posted in the hallways here at 60 MacDougal. Additionally, in the afternoon students headed outside to have some fun with all the various music genres to listen and dance to!
Lastly, as we head into Mid-Winter recess, we hope you all have a happy and healthy winter break. Take care and we look forward to seeing everyone when we come back February 28, 2022!

Practical Living
Recently, students have been spending more time in the school building focusing on increasing their independent living skills! Students in the Dorsey cohort have been learning to shop, plan, and cook for themselves using healthy and simple ingredients. Students organized a shopping list, planned and executed a breakfast recipe in small groups. Classmates worked cohesively and cooperatively to create a balanced breakfast. Students were encouraged to take their skills home and cook breakfast for their families!
