SKILLs Students "Give Back" with Coat Drive
Students at SKILLs know how important it is to be warm while out in the community. By donating old jackets/coats our students are helping people in need stay warm too. This is a great way for SKILLs to give back to their community and make a difference for many New Yorkers who go without a coat in the winter months. Starting December 3rd to December 17th SKILLs students will be collecting donations during their respective 1st period class, which will be given to New York Cares. Students have already starting creating flyers to get the word out about this opportunity to help out those in need.

Bus Survey for Families
New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI) and the ARISE Coalition are surveying New York City students and parents/guardians about their experiences during the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 school years with the busing system of the New York City Department of Education (DOE) to further our advocacy for a better transportation system for students with disabilities. This is part of our investigation of school buses in New York City, and we plan to make our findings available to the public. Your name, contact information, and any identifying responses, however, will be kept strictly confidential. SKILLs and Safety
On October 31st, students from Jamaica Bay and Flushing Bay were given the opportunity to participate in a presentation given by two officers from the NYPD. The officers came to SKILLs to help our students learn more about safety within the community, as well as expand on what the students have already learned. Students were able to interact with the officers and asked questions that had been prepared in class and questions they thought of on the spot! It was wonderful to see the students getting so involved and wanting to learn as much as possible. The students seemed to be very interested in situations they may have faced in the community before, such as subway safety, what to do if they see a stranger in the community, and how to ask for help if necessary. The officers explained to students how to approach a situation that may not seem safe, as well as what to do if they need help from a subway conductor or MTA worker. The students were then given the chance to practice asking for help, and role play with the officers in different potential situations! We plan to continuously implement the information students learned in the classroom and community, as well as invite the officers to come back for another presentation. Please feel free to email me with any questions. Have a great week! -Ari Simner [email protected] |
