Since the start of the year we've had weeks of school-work, community outings and internships, today it was time to celebrate! There was much excitement in the air today for the Halloween Party! Some students decided to wear costumes and all students had fun coming together to celebrate! At the party we had a haunted house, a dance party, a costume/dance runway, an escape room and even made rice cakes emojis! We hope you have a happy Halloween if you're celebrating! Virtual Family Conferences Conferences will be held on Thursday, November 4 and Friday, November 5. Meetings will take place via Zoom or on the telephone, with a teacher and a related service provider.
Transitions Halloween Party! On Friday, October 29 during the school day we will have a Halloween Party! The party will take place both inside the building and outside on the play street. Party Details:
Outdoor Dining on Fridays This year it is important that we find creative ways for our student cohorts to safety socialize and spend time together. Each Friday, students have the choice if they would like to eat and hang out with other cohorts on MacDougal St. It is great fun to get to enjoy our own "outdoor dining" experience. ART CONNECTIONIn Art Connection, students are definitely letting their creativity SHINE! Students created labels to stay organized, following cleaning guidelines for the D.I.Y Lab, and learned about artists for Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month. In addition, students used art journals to draw in the beginning of the class using various drawing prompts. Once students complete the drawing, there's a chance to share and discuss with the class. For Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month students learned and discussed some of theses artists: Lilian Martinez, J.Lo, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Uzumaki Cepeda, Bad Bunny, Oswaldo Guayasamin, Valentina, Celia Cruz, Frida Kahlo, and Salvador Dali. During November, we will be learning about Native American artists for Native American Heritage Month. Do you know any Native American artists? Please feel free to share with Yilkari and Samantha. Yilkari: [email protected] Samantha: [email protected] Practical Living In Practical Living, students in the Dorsey and Sandberg cohorts had the opportunity to explore and reintegrate themselves into the surrounding communities. Students had the opportunity to form groups, work collaboratively, and independently plan a trip in the communities around Transitions. Students designated specific roles for themselves and compromised on trip locations and plans. The groups were able to travel to locations like Bryant Park, Union Square Park, The Oculus and Hudson River Park. As the semester goes on, students will continue to select new locations, plan their trips and increase their independence in both planning and traveling with peers. Cooke Alumni Association Alumni activities have returned! Transitions students and Cooke alumni met up both virtually and in-person for our after-school workshops (Music Mania, Anime Club, Fitness Pals, and Snapshot Share). In Music Mania, students traveled through the decades to explore chart toppers and put their music knowledge to the test by answering trivia questions. In Anime Club, students have been getting to know one another through their love of all things Anime. Students have been sharing their favorite anime characters, movies, shows and powers. The Fitness Pals crew has been moving! We have been doing bodyweight workouts and workshops inspired by Pilates and yoga. In Snapshot Share, students have headed out into the community with their photo assignments, using SoHo and Greenwich Village as their subjects. COOKE'S COIN CAMPAIGN IS BACK!St. John’s University and Cooke Transitions Transitions students have begun their fall semester Mondays at St. John’s University’s (SJU) Queens Campus. Students attend a morning financial literacy class and an afternoon ELA class which has a focus on carbon footprints. Students attend classes in person or by Zoom. SJU students join our students in class as peers. We look forward to another successful semester as students get to know they’re new teachers and adapt to their new environment and schedules. School Supply Shopping & other math outings! Students in all cohorts went school supply shopping with their math classes the first few weeks of school. Before going out into the community, students used Google Maps and other navigational tools to find stores near Transitions where they could purchase supplies. During these trips, students practiced budgeting, comparing prices, and collecting the right amount of change if they used cash. Students also practiced navigating safely in the community and locating safe people. If students brought in their own supplies, they were still able to practice finding different prices for items and identified which was cheaper/ more expensive. Students had a great time exploring stores around Transitions! RESOURCES AND UPCOMING EVENTSClick HERE to register and for information about the meeting's WebEx.
