Jacqueline Bediako Assistant Division Head, SKILLs Back To School Night 2019It was such a pleasure to see the great turn out for Back To School Night, last Wednesday, September 25, 2019. It was a prime opportunity for parents, staff and students to not only get to know one another, but to be introduced to what content was to be offered throughout the academic year. We especially want to applaud those students who joined us. Alumni WorkshopsAlumni workshops were off to a good start this week! PhotovilleOn September 19th students from the Jets and Giants cohorts attended a photography exhibition and workshop at Brooklyn Bridge Park. During the trip, students viewed several exhibits, participated in youth discussion panels, and discussed artwork with photographers. Exhibits were centered around current hot topics spanning from environmental issues to the impact of fashion and identity. Team Building to Start the Year
SKILLs students began the school year with the “Egg Drop”team building exercise. Groups were given different materials to build a container for their egg and protect it from a fall. We saw students listen to each other, share ideas and most importantly learn that whether or not the egg cracked, a team effort can still be a success! All students played an important role on their team and we hope to bring this winning attitude to all activities this school year. The 2019/2020 academic year has started, and students are enjoying classes such as Humanities 101, Studio Arts, Applied Math, and Digital Life SKILLs! Students have immersed themselves in learning and therapy provided by community partners, such as the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music and Saint John’s University. Finally, students have rekindled old friendships, made new friends and spent time getting to know their new teachers and therapists!
