Feelings Check-in! During Morning Meeting this year, counseling work focused on emotion identification, regulation, and social skills. Using this feelings scan visual, students built skills to identify and sort "comfortable" and "uncomfortable" feelings, identify feelings in themselves, and recognize feelings in others. Using the sentence starter "I feel_____ because_____" students were able to describe their emotions and associate reasons. Emotional identification supports students' self-advocacy, awareness of regulation needs, and breeds coping skills. Families can use this visual to support self-expression and conversations at home!
Out and about in our local neighborhood!
This past semester in Civic Debates, students from Caesars Bay, Rockaway Bay, and Pelham Bay visited the High Line, the FIT museum, and the new Hudson Yards Mall. Many of these students from each cohort participated in community learning by seeing the final project exhibits of students from FIT, taking in the enjoyable views of the High Line, and the murals on each level of the Hudson Yards mall (HY x OffTheWall https://www.hudsonyardsnewyork.com/stories/hy-x-offthewall). Students had discussions with their peers about what they liked and what message the cultural arts and murals were trying to convey. Enjoy the following pictures of students at each of these sites! Have a great summer! -Devin Power Let's Get Social!

Spring is here… time for some museum trips and walking tours. This semester Jamaica, Sheepshead, and Flushing cohorts are discussing Community/Public Art. These cohorts have visited The Whitney Museum and Jewish Museum(4 sessions). Last week Sheepshead Bay and Flushing Bay enjoyed a beautiful lunch in Central Park's Conservatory Garden before heading out on their "Walk Around the Block" tour with El Museo del Barrio in Spanish Harlem. This semester students have been working on Instagram challenges to learn safe social media skills. Using our private accounts, SKILLs students have been participating in “challenges” that the classes came up with together. Recent challenges include “Throwback Thursday”, “Best Picture of food”, and “ Best Sports Photo”. In class students learn about safe, appropriate posting and then practice camera skills to take pictures. In the following week the class takes photos independently and posts them identifying themselves using custom hashtags everyone got to make up. Recently staff got into the fun by sharing their own Throwback Thursday pictures with Pelham bay.
TRANSITION PLAN UPDATES
We are back from Spring Break and SKILLs students are back to working on their transition plans. Earlier this week, Issac and Justin participated in meetings at Manhattan's ACCES-VR (Adult Career and Continuing Education Services- Vocational Rehabilitation) office. Both Issac and Justin met with Vocational Counselors and discussed their plans for competitive employment in the future. Issac expressed an interest in pursuing a retail position similar to his past internship at CVS and his Summer Youth experience at Boltons. Justin talked to his counselor about his current internship delivering food to home-bound seniors, and weekend job training at Invictus Enterprises where he is a baker. Alex also visited YAI's Art Day Habilitation Without Walls program for a tour. Alex enjoys doing art and would like to continue this after he leaves the program. Alex would like to create a schedule where he can work on his goals of becoming more independent, as well as build on his artistic skills.

Last Tuesday evening, Julian and Dan signed their Supported Decision-Making Agreements at a signing ceremony held at the SKILLs Program. Supported Decision Making (SDM) is an alternative option to guardianship for persons with I/DD. Both young men have chosen important people in their lives who they trust to be their Supporters in various decision-making areas (health, finances, career development, social, etc.); the specific kinds of support they want to receive; and how they wish to receive those supports. For two years, Julian and Dan and their Supporters have participated in a facilitation process with a trained Facilitator to determine how they wish to be supported in making decisions in their lives.
