Back to School Night Virtual Back to School Night will be held on Wednesday, September 29 at 6PM. Our team is looking forward to sharing our curriculum plans, virtually seeing our families and continuing to build our partnership with each other!
Please reach out if you have any questions! We're Back! Greetings from the Cooke Transitions program! These past few weeks, students in all classes (seven cohorts) have been excited to learn both in the classroom and in the community. Since the start of the new school year, many classes have been focusing on the theme of organization. Students have had the opportunity to go out into the community and buy their own school supplies with support from teachers, paraprofessionals and community inclusion assistants. Additionally, students have been going out into the community to get to know the various adjacent neighborhoods (SoHo, Greenwich Village, etc.) as well as getting to know their peers, teachers, and RSPs. Lastly, students have been thrilled to take public transportation safely to their destinations whether it be Taste Buds, BCM, or St. Johns. Above all, the entire staff are all very proud of the young adults getting acclimated to a brand new school year at Cooke Transitions! Please watch the short video below with many pictures and moments from this past week! -Devin Power Cooke Transitions Head Teacher Humanities PAGE COHORT GOES TO TASTE BUDS KITCHEN The Page cohort had their first cooking class at Taste Buds Kitchen and Cooking School in Chelsea. The students donned their personal aprons and jumped right in to making "Mamon", a traditional Philipino spongecake . Two professional chefs instructed students to crack and then separate eggs, whip the egg whites with a hand held mixer and combine all the ingredients to make mini cakes that were baked in a convection oven. All the students enjoyed learning new skills and trying the delicious light cakes. The students love the experience of working in a professional kitchen just like those on popular cooking shows. Specific skills that they get to practice include: pouring, mixing, measuring and using simple appliances. The class takes place on Monday afternoons so be sure to check in with your child about what they made and ask them if they have a treat to share! The students will receive printed copies of the recipes and be able to keep their personalized aprons at the end of the semester. Taste Buds is a nut-free kitchen and all the recipes are Gluten and Dairy free. Covid 19 precautions and safety practices are being enforced. There is a feeling of JOY to all be back in the building together. We also started at Zumba and local community trips. Next week we'll be heading to St John's University, the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, Taste Buds Kitchen and school supply shopping. We'll also be kicking off out-to-lunch travel training with almost 75% of students! A large part of all of our programming is to focus on how young adults stay healthy and safe, while still being an active part of their community. Below are some pictures from the first week of school, we hope you enjoy them! |
