Jacqueline Bediako Assistant Division Head, SKILLs Newsflash: Updates from Community Literature Hello Families! Students began Community Literature as one of their classes this year and are starting to understand the routines and organization of the classroom! Throughout the year we will be going on different community trips focused on reading preferences, culture, current events, and literature in the community. Our first trip this year was to the Muhlenberg Library on 23rd Street and 7th Avenue. During this trip, students were able to sign up for a New York Public Library card if they did not already have one, become acquainted with the library, explore different reading materials, and practice speaking with a librarian in order to ask for assistance or check out a book. We will continue to take trips to the library throughout the year, and will venture to libraries in different boroughs as well. The main current event we have been speaking about in class is the Climate Change Strike and how it is affecting the world both on both a national and local level. Students have become very interested in discussing activism and what it means to advocate for something you believe in. Greta Thunberg, has been a person of importance in our class. Greta's role in helping to lead the movement across schools is a topic the students have grasped onto. Students have expressed that throughout the year they would like to continue learning more about current events, and issues that affect our world as well as how they can help make a change! We are very excited for this year! Please feel free to contact me with any questions! Ari Simner, Head Teacher [email protected] Let's Get Social!Let’s Get Social! Each week they don their aprons and follow the instructions of a professional chef to create delicious treats. This semester the theme has been A Road Trip in the North East featuring famous regional foods. So far they have “travelled to” New York, Maryland and Massachusetts. The next class will travel back to New York state and the students will be making Cauliflower “Buffalo Wings”. All the recipes are vegetarian and gluten-free. Taste Buds is also a nut-free kitchen to accommodate any allergies. The students love the experience of working in a professional kitchen just like those on popular cooking shows. Specific skills that they get to practice include: pouring, mixing, measuring and using simple appliances. The class takes place on Wednesday afternoons so be sure to check in with your son/daughter about what they made and ask them if they have a doggie bag!
