We will continue to work hard to keep our community safe and healthy! Special Event with HSBC and AHRCNYC On Wednesday, Burke cohort participated in a special event sponsored by HSBC and in partnership with AHRCNYC. The event focused on both workplace skills and a fun holiday-themed activity.
Math-Making Meaningful ConnectionsIn math classes, students have been learning about financial literacy. Our unit of study began with developing an understanding of why financial literacy is important and how it equips us to make important financial decisions. Throughout the unit of study, students will be developing knowledge and skills related to shopping, banking and budgeting. Through multimodal instruction in classes and Google Classroom assignments, students have been counting money, estimating prices, comparing prices, and identifying whether or not they have enough for a desired purchase. For banking, students have been reviewing key vocabulary terms such as: deposit, withdrawal, and transfer. Students have participated in games and activities related to understanding similarities and differences between checking and savings accounts, and identifying the operation inherent in transactions (i.e deposits mean adding, withdrawals mean subtracting). As dictated by our current climate of living through a pandemic, students will be exploring online banking as a convenient alternative to physical bank visits. They will learn about online banking safety and services offered through this medium. Student motivation seems high. Students have been making meaningful connections about their own personal banking experiences and have been asking relevant questions. Students have also begun to think about their own personal savings goals. As the semester progresses, we will move on to developing our understanding of budgets and how they can help us become more financially independent. Students will learn about income and expenses, as well as needs and wants, and develop an understanding on how to prioritize them. Most importantly, students will begin to examine their own personal finances including sources of income and spending habits. As parents, you can make learning about money a part of everyday life. Use activities like grocery shopping as teachable moments. Talk about needs and wants. Help your child make good choices by encouraging them to spend money on their needs before things they want. Learning all these skills will help equip students on their journey to independence. Internship News This semester our students have interned both in their home and in our on-site "Internship Warehouses." While the internship program looks a bit different this year, students have shown enthusiasm and a strong work ethic! Through creativity and determination, the program's goals remain steadfast: to develop both hard and soft work skills. News from Nurse Liz!
