Digital Lifeskills
This semester students have been working on Instagram challenges to learn safe social media skills. Using our private accounts, SKILLs students have been participating in “challenges” that the classes came up with together. Recent challenges include “Throwback Thursday”, “Best Picture of food”, and “ Best Sports Photo”. In class students learn about safe, appropriate posting and then practice camera skills to take pictures. In the following week the class takes photos independently and posts them identifying themselves using custom hashtags everyone got to make up. Recently staff got into the fun by sharing their own Throwback Thursday pictures with Pelham bay.
TRANSITION PLAN UPDATES
We are back from Spring Break and SKILLs students are back to working on their transition plans. Earlier this week, Issac and Justin participated in meetings at Manhattan's ACCES-VR (Adult Career and Continuing Education Services- Vocational Rehabilitation) office. Both Issac and Justin met with Vocational Counselors and discussed their plans for competitive employment in the future. Issac expressed an interest in pursuing a retail position similar to his past internship at CVS and his Summer Youth experience at Boltons. Justin talked to his counselor about his current internship delivering food to home-bound seniors, and weekend job training at Invictus Enterprises where he is a baker. Alex also visited YAI's Art Day Habilitation Without Walls program for a tour. Alex enjoys doing art and would like to continue this after he leaves the program. Alex would like to create a schedule where he can work on his goals of becoming more independent, as well as build on his artistic skills.

Last Tuesday evening, Julian and Dan signed their Supported Decision-Making Agreements at a signing ceremony held at the SKILLs Program. Supported Decision Making (SDM) is an alternative option to guardianship for persons with I/DD. Both young men have chosen important people in their lives who they trust to be their Supporters in various decision-making areas (health, finances, career development, social, etc.); the specific kinds of support they want to receive; and how they wish to receive those supports. For two years, Julian and Dan and their Supporters have participated in a facilitation process with a trained Facilitator to determine how they wish to be supported in making decisions in their lives.
