Transitions Got Talent! Thank you for joining us, cheering us on and supporting us at our Virtual Talent Show! We hope that you had as much fun watching it, as we did making it! If you missed it or if you want to watch the fabulous show again, you can view it HERE. A special thank you to our Talent Show Committee: Andrea, Ria, John, David, Eric and Ryan! Art Connection Have you heard of portrait painter Kehinde Wiley? Kehinde Wiley is an American portrait painter based in New York City, he is known for his naturalistic paintings of Black people influenced by historical paintings with a modern twist. His paintings have vivid colors and patterns. For Art Connection, students will be creating a self-portrait inspired by Kehinde’s artwork. Students are in the process of creating their backgrounds using stamps they made in class with Model Magic. The stamps are used to create patterns and texture like Kehinde’s paintings. Transitions at St. John's UniversitySoccer with the Red Storm It is 2nd semester and the Sandberg cohort has been spending their Mondays at St. John's University in Queens. This past Monday, Transitions students met up with SJU's Women's Soccer Team and showed off their futbol skills on the field at Belman Stadium. Even on a chilly day, the students had lots of fun with the Red Storm players! Nutrition and Well-Being After our morning battling it on the field, Transitions students moved back into the classroom to discuss nutrition, healthy eating, and the power of advertising with SJU professor Monica. Students worked on an activity guessing the amount of sugar that can be found in various drinks. We were very surprised to find out about the sugar content in some of our favorite drinks! Students were encouraged to pay attention to the foods they consume, and learned about the apps Nutri Score and YUKA (both can be found in the apple and android app stores). Both apps can be used at the supermarket so that students can make their own judgement calls on the nutritional value of food products prior to making their purchase. Cook Off! In Food and Nutrition classes the kitchen was abuzz with excitement this week as students worked in groups to execute a recipe of their choice. They picked their challenge, organized their teams and gathered their supplies as their instructors kept a close watch. It was fun to see students motivate one another and worked together to recall tips they learned in order to create their culinary masterpieces. Enjoy a little of the action below.
